Growing Pains

Growing out your hair sucks. Straight up. It looks like you have no idea what you are doing with your life. Some days you want to run to the salon and dye it all or cut it off but in the long run, you know it is worth it to grow it out. Here is my journey and how I am handling my mane.

My hair growth after 6 months of no bleaching.

First off, stop brushing your hair. Brushes pull out more hair than you need to lose. So start combing!
A wide tooth comb will do. Toss the brush.

You'll realize that as your bleached hair grows out, you will have two different textures, two different types of hair. My roots are greasy but tips are dry. Like wtf am I supposed to do with that so ta-da, DRY SHAMPOO!
Batiste is my main homie.

Vitamins are always a great idea to help fill in nutrients you may miss in your regular diet. I started taking these Nail, Hair and Skin pills and have noticed not only growth but strength!

MegaFood Skin, Nails and Hair vitamins which I take on the daily.

On the days I actually decide to wash my hair, I use these three products randomly.

Aveda Damage Remedy: Used on tips of my hair, every other week (y'all it has quinoa in it so that must mean it is healthy for your head)

Marc Anthony Argan Oil of Morocco: Used on middle to tips of hair, after every wash

Finally, when you want to rock a pony or pigtails, do it with a scrunchie. I know, lame, a scrunchie but legit. The soft cloth that surrounds the elastic is not as likely to pull out your hair.

Stack em up, they won't do any damage.

When it comes to making your roots less obvious, braids are the way. But to be truthful, embrace your roots and let your natural hair fly.

From a bleach addict to a girl growing out her hair, I feel your pain. Growing out your hair sucks but in the meantime, color your hair with the bleached hair and enjoy growing out your hair. The process will be sucky, but its worth it when your have long and fabulous or at least short and healthy hair.

Until next time!

XOXO

Nail Varnish of the Week

I hadn't had my nails done black for quite some time and I really love matte, well, everything. So….

I legit just did them yesterday so this varnish is good for a few days, seeing as it does chip easily.

The varnish is Forever 21's Matte Nail Color and it dries super fast! Which is awesome because you can do stuff faster but they also don't dry completely for sometime. Just a warning.

Obviously, the color is in black and it was super cheap, for $2.80, so that is probably why it chips so fast but whatever.

Overall, it is an awesome varnish to wear for a few days and if you want to look badass and wear matte black, that is the way to do it.

Stay Fab!

Nail Varnish of the Week

If you ever want to feel fab for like 3.5 days (that is how long it lasted before it chipped). I was clearly inspired by Lou Teasdale's new nails from Japan. Glitter glitter glitter!!

Seriously, how does one not feel fabulous with sparkly nails?

This was about 5 coats with a clear base coat on the bottom.

Like I did say, it did chip within 3 1/2 days but it was easy to peel off. Sparkles are just so hard to take off so be ready for that feat.

Stay (glittery) fabulous!

Nail Varnish of the Week

For my birthday, I received so many nail varnishes! Like loads, I can't wait to try them all out. Anyway, one of my good friends, Amanda, gave me a matching set of nail colors that she thought would look good together. I decided to try them out this week to let you know.

I can't tell a lie, I am not a patient nail varnish dryer so there may be a few starched but the color is so amazing!

They were Maybelline's line called Color Show. The colors go on super smooth and if you wait the allotted time, they would stay that actual smooth (whoops)!

The base color is called "Home Sweet Chrome" (amazing name by the way) and the sparkly top is called "Gleaming Graphite."

So Bam! There they are, you know I am a fan of dark nails and this was a wonderful change for my nail beds. They have to chip horribly after 5 days so I am a fan!

Stay Fab! See you Wednesday!

Hair to Dye or Not to Dye?

Damaging Hair Products?:

As I hair dye addict, I hear everyday "Wow you probably have really damaged hair!" And yes, I do. But it is because I bleach my hair.  A common misconception that hair dye is super damaging, when in reality, its not like that at all.  I use "semi-permant" hair dye which has a less harsher pigment. I'm not saying hair dye is healthy but its not the worst. Bleaching is the worst. It took a good 3 months after my first initial bleach job for my hair to feel "normal" again. For most brunettes to get the color I have achieved, must bleach their hair. Blondes, on the other hand, are quite lucky and can get the pastel colored hair with little to no bleach.

Ways to Achieve Hair Color WITHOUT Bleach:

Colored hair has become quite the trend this year so if that is a look you want to rock, there are certainly easier, less permeant and damaging ways to do so!

Chalk- This is best for people with darker hair to get a vibrant color but it is perfect for all hair colors and types. It usually washes out within in a day or two.  Hair chalk is now available in most drugstores and beauty supply shops.

Spray- I wrote a post about this and have yet to try it but according to reviews this is the best for a longer stay and is very easy to apply! Check out the post to read more!

Clip-Ins- For a year, I wore clip-ins and thought they were a great option to keep my parents and myself happy! They act like an extension and are easy to take on and off. The brand I had was Hair Pop and they were relatively cheap.

Colored Mascara- When I was 10, I used to use my Mom's purple mascara to streak my hair. It would stay for about 1 day but it was great way to add color in a healthy, fun way.

Kool Aid- Now I never did this because my hair was too dark but for all my blonde friends they had a blast.  Take 3-6 packets of whatever color you would like and mix them with water and conditioner. After they are all mixed, apply to wherever you want the color and let sit for however long you want the pigment to stay. If you sleep in it, it will obviously be a darker shade of that color compared to if you leave it in for 20 minutes.

Ways to Achieve Hair Color WITH Bleach:

If you are ready to take the big leap into bleaching your hair to get the pastel color, I highly suggest going to a salon to get your hair bleached. Bleach is nothing to just mess around with.  I will admit parts of hair have broken off and fallen out because of bleaching.  If you smart about it, you will be happy with your result.

Once your hair is bleached to almost white (as a brunette you will turn orange before going blonde then white so hold on tight it will happen), use white toner to get all the brassy colors out.  To achieve pastel hair, you must have white hair, anything less than white, the dye will not hold. Leave the toner in for about 15 minutes. I keep mine in longer because I get paranoid about not having white enough hair.

Now the important part! The hair dye (I use Le Riche Directions)! Personally, I choose to mix the dye with conditioner to lighten the pigment and get "lilac" hair, plus it helps condition my hair. If you choose to just apply the dye straight to the hair be sure it is all evenly spread and all the roots are covered. Get a friend to make sure the back of your head is all covered in the dye. Leave in for as long as you would like depending on the shade and wash out with cold water!

To keep the color from fading so fast, put a little bit of hair dye in your conditioner and use it every other day.

If you have any questions about any of these options when it comes to hair dying or the process, tweet me @MavSlade! All photos are from my Instagram!

Spray Hair Color

If you follow me on ANY of my social medias, you would know I am obsessed with colored hair! My hair is personally a mix of blue, purple and pink. The more color, the better in my book.
My hair has been through well...a lot. It was bleached for two days straight then sat with toner for forever and then finally dyed purple. As I have been experimenting with my hair, I have added in the pink and blue.

Before I put my hair through everything, I tried colored clip-ins from ULTA. They were great for the young people who wanted to try a little something different (and are under their parents' roof).

The next attempt of being cool was hair chalk! I bought some $4 pink hair chalk from Rite Aid. I loved it but didn't like how it would wash out right away. I eventually used it again when my hair was bleached and it held much longer!

But the moment I heard about this SPRAY Hair Color, I got so excited! Since it is spray, it is more condensed and it can take the darkest pigmented hair and turn it to pink (pink only holds in blonde or bleached hair). The product is made by Bumble and bumble. It is called Spray Chalk and it comes in 4 different colors as of now (cobalt, lavender, mint and blush)! The prices are $19 for a 1.4oz.

It washes out within a day but it allows you to experiment with different colors and ideas (ombre, stripes, start at the roots), it is whatever you want to make it! I have yet to try the product but needless to say, it shall be in my hands soon!

So go grab some and spray away....at least for a day!
